SECTION 401 – SCOPE
ICC 600
CHAPTER 4 BUILDINGS WITH CONCRETE OR MASONRY EXTERIOR WALLS SECTION 401 – SCOPE 401.1 Scope.
This chapter prescribes construction requirements for buildings where all exterior walls above the foundation are concrete or masonry and where the building meets the parameters and requirements of Chapter 1. Interior walls and partitions may be concrete, masonry, wood framed, cold-formed steel framed, or any other approved construction. Masonry walls shall comply with the requirements of Sections 402 and 403. Concrete walls shall be in accordance with Sections 402 and 404. Exception: Use of this chapter shall be permitted in accordance with Chapter 6 for buildings with a maximum of one story of light-frame construction above a single story of concrete, masonry or ICF construction. |
GUIDE COMMENTARY
CHAPTER 4 BUILDINGS WITH CONCRETE OR MASONRY EXTERIOR WALLS SECTION 401 – SCOPE 401.1 Scope.
Note that the ICC 600 addresses wind resistant design and construction only. In most areas of the country where high wind loads are prevalent, such as those addressed by the ICC 600, wind loads will govern the design. However, in areas where other types of loads may govern, such as seismic, it is necessary to check those loading cases to determine if they may govern instead of the wind loads. Other standards and design aides are available for meeting the design requirements for loadbearing concrete masonry structures as required by Section 403.1 of ICC 600. These resources may be accessed here: https://ncma.org/resources/tek-solutions-center/ Interior walls and other elements that are not part of the lateral force-resisting system can be constructed of any approved system or material. However, wood and cold-formed steel framed elements cannot be used to as shear walls to support concrete masonry walls either in-plane or out-of-plane because of the differences in stiffness. Light-frame floor and roof assemblies, however, are permitted to support masonry walls. |
